Semi-Finals Game 1: Groningen - Leiden 67-76

Date: May 1, 2010
ZZ Leiden rose to the challenge in a hostile environment and won its first semi-final game with an surprising 67-76 victory over the GasTerra Flames Saturday night in sold-out Martini Plaza. Danny Gibson 24 points helped ZZ Leiden win their first match in the semi final of the Dutch playoffs with a a dominating 67-76 win over Coach Marco van den Berg's Flames. Things are looking good for the ZZ Leiden this season. A solid 9-point win away against the GasTerra Flames surprised even head coach Toon van Helfteren, and bodes well considering the team is only set to get stronger before its next game. ZZ Leiden have worked extremely hard on defence last week, however it would be tested a great deal in this game. Add in some lock-down, throw-away-the-key 36.8 percent field-goal percentage defense to hold the Flames in control and this win was easier than anyone would have guessed. ZZ Leiden opened the first quarter with a 16-0 run to blow the game open and cruised to a 23-12 lead in the first quarter. The Flames, however, answered with a 15-0 run in the second quarter, by halftime, ZZ Leiden led, 34-39. But the Flames managed to take the lead at 46-45 in the third quarter, but with a Danny Gibson three-pointer ZZ Leiden still managed to take an 3-point lead into the fourth quarter 53-56. However, that was the closest the Flames would get as ZZ Leiden extended its lead back to as many as 9 points, going on to win by a score of 67-76. ZZ Leiden won the rebound battle 39-34 ZZ Leiden had three players score in double figures, led by point guard Danny Gibson who had 24 points. Seamus Boxley added 17 and Ronny LeMelle chipped in 12. GasTerra Flames had three players score in double figures led by power forward Jason Ellis, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Bauscher added 12 points, while teammate Robby Bostain chipped in 10. *by Fred Roggen
