Regular Season Round 26: Barako Bull - Air21 Express 98-99

The Air21 Express were on cruise control for most part of the journey until they decided to slam on the brakes, disembark and walk the rest of the way. Good thing somebody who has been gone nearly seven months still knows how to read directions. Wynne Arboleda, only in his second game after his indefinite suspension was lifted by PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios, hit a pull-up jumper inside the free throw line with 41 seconds to go and the Express hung on to avert a humiliating disaster Wednesday night, edging the Barako Coffee Masters, 99-98, in the Fiesta Cup at the Araneta Coliseum. Both teams remain locked in a deathly embrace at the cellar with 2-10 win-loss cards although the Express came out with pained smiles on their faces after surviving the harrowing experience. Just as the Wednesday crowd was settling in for the featured game between San Miguel Beer and Barangay Ginebra, especially after Air21 opened a 54-23 spread in the second quarter, Barako Coffee suddenly came alive to engineer one of the most stirring comebacks in league history. From 31 points down, the Coffee Masters steamrolled over the Express, cutting the deficit to 58-34 at the half, tying the game 74-all after three quarters, and moving ahead, 98-97, on a four-point play by guard Reed Juntilla with 53 seconds to go. Juntilla, who finished with 29 points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, 5-of-7 from within the arc, and 7-of-7 from the foul line, was fouled by Arboleda as he launched his eighth 3-pointer, made the three and nailed the bonus free throw to wipe out a 97-94 Air21 lead.
