Regular Season Day 2: PUERTO RICO - TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO 91-97 OT

Trinidad and Tobago registered the first win in Santo Domingo. They failed against Belize in Day One, but after that surprised Puerto Rico beating them 91-97 in overtime. It means that Trinidad and Tobago have 1-1 now in Preliminary Group A, while Puerto Rico is on 0-1 as this game was their first one at this event. Steven Lewis was the leading player in victory with 24 points and 6 rebounds. Kibwe Trim also was great adding 18 points and 9 rebounds for his team. Ian Young scored 13, while Wilfred Benjamin helped with double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Carlos Arroyo shined on the other side with 24 points and 9 assists. Peter John Ramos (9 as) and Renaldo Balkman (9 rebs) had 17 points each. Puerto Rico shined in the first, while Trinidad and Tobago was better team in the second half. Carlos Arroyo and his teammates made 25-21 lead in the first ten minutes and later jumped to comfortable 50-36 (HT). At that time it seemed that Puerto Rico will take this one easily, but Trinidad and Tobago players had other thoughts. Steven Lewis was on fire and together with his teammates cut the margin to ten pointes before the last quarter (23-27, Q3). They totally took control on Puerto Rico in the last ten minutes of regular time ending it with excellent 11-21 for 84-84 tie. In the overtime the hard work and patience paid off for Trinidad and Tobago as they secured the game with a basket by Joel Haywood and two free throws by Ian Young with 24.1 seconds left. Trinidad and Tobago will have a day off on Wednesday, while Puerto Rico will meet Mexico.
