Quarter-Finals Round 1: Rain or Shine - San Mig Coffee 102-108

Date: July 9, 2010
James Yap sizzled with a conference-high 31 points and PJ Simon stepped in for the cramps-stricken Cliff Brown to deliver the crucial plays at the finish as B-MEG Derby Ace topped Rain or Shine, 108-102, at the start of their PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-five quarterfinal showdown at the Araneta Coliseum last night. With Roger Yap, Marc Pingris and KG Canaleta coming up with key contributions, the Llamados survived playing with an all-Filipino crew in the final quarter, nailing the win that kept them on track for a possible double-championship in the season. "It's a great bail-out win for us. What made it sweeter was the fact that we played all-Filipino for the entire fourth quarter. We're the all-Filipino (Philippine Cup) champions and somehow we showed it in this game," said Derby Ace coach Ryan Gregorio. "James kept us alive the whole game, PJ put the finishing touches and Kerby (Raymundo) helped us too. It's nice to win against a highly athletic team like Rain or Shine," Gregorio added. Simon hit a three-pointer then made two charities in a 12-second stretch at endgame to clinch the win for the Llamados. Yap played steadily for 33 minutes, continuing to stay focused on his job despite his reported marital woes. The 2006 MVP awardee was 4-of-10 from the three-point area, 8-of-8 from the two-point zone and 3-of-3 from the stripe in improving his previous conference high of 28 points. Entertainment reporters from various networks were all over him after the game. "It's hard not to appreciate the man. He can shut off the distractions and just play the game," said Gregorio of his top gun. "This is the time of the year when the basketball court is our sanctuary. I'm telling the boys as soon as they enter the court, they should take away all the distractions. He's not the only one with a problem. It's just that his is publicized," Gregorio said. Raymundo chipped in seven rebounds, four points and two assists as he played his first game in the conference after a bout with a back injury. The Elasto Painters put up a tough challenge with the team's big three of Rod Nealy, Gabe Norwood and Sol Mercado all dishing out big numbers. Rookie Jervy Cruz also played well for the Elasto Painters who dragged the favored Llamados in a close game marked by six deadlocks and seven lead changes. "Make no mistake about this team. Look at their roster, they're a team looking as if they have three imports (Nealy, Norwood and Mercado)," said Gregorio. With the team down by seven at 96-103, Norwood and Nealy rifled in a triple each as RoS charged back at 102-103 with 1:22 left to play. The Elasto Painters had a chance to grab the lead but Nealy missed an ill-advised three-point attempt with time down to 37 seconds. With the RoS defense sagging on James Yap in the ensuing play, Derby Ace's other Yap Roger took charge, creating a play that set up Simon for the big trey making it 106-102 with 15.1 ticks left on the clock. "I was telling the boys when you hear your number called, be ready to play. I think PJ heard me loud and clear," said Gregorio of Simon, ably filling in for Brown who cramped out as early as the third period. *Courtesy of www.philstar.com
