Quarter-Finals Round 2: San Mig Coffee - Rain or Shine 69-79
Date: July 11, 2010
Rain or Shine cooled down Derby Ace's shooting touch with a daunting 3-2 zone and translating it into a rousing 79-69 win that leveled their PBA Fiesta Cup quarterfinals at 1-1 apiece Sunday night at the Astrodome. Known more for their fancy-footloose style of play, the Elasto Painters surprisingly beat the defensive-minded Llamados in their own brand of game. The Elasto Painters held the Llamados to their lowest output in the season-ending tournament by limiting them to a conference low 28.4 percent clip from the field. They capped their tremendous defensive stance by holding the Llamados to just a single point - a split from the foul line by James Yap - in a five-minute span during the fourth quarter, that quashed any hopes of a Derby Ace comeback. With the series now reduced into a best-of-three affair, Wednesday's Game 3 at the Araneta Coliseum, is certainly a pivotal one. "We made some adjustments in our zone defense after that close loss in Game 1," said Sol Mercado, who topscored for Rain or Shine with 19 points. "We've come all the way from the wild card to win here," said the stocky Fil-Am guard. Yap's split free throw inside the final three minutes broke the Llamados' silence and shoved them to within 67-70 after trailing by as many as eight. That's when Mercado began to take over on offense for the Elasto Painters. The sophomore Elasto Painter completed a three-point play - off a runner - in Rain or Shine's next possession to make it a six-point lead, and following another missed attempt for the Llamados at the other end, Mercado barreled his way inside two Derby Ace defenders to score on a two handed lay-up with 47 seconds remaining, and a 75-67 edge. Import Rod Nealy had a quiet 17-point game for the night, opting to give the limelight on the high-flying Gabe Norwood. Norwood, easily one of the most exciting players to watch in the PBA, finished with 13 points. Het came through with two of the game's highlight-reel plays - a perfect alley-oop throwdown off a perfect feed by Mercado in the first half, and a two-handed putback following a missed shot by Jeff Chan. Only James Yap lighted up the scoring for Derby Ace on a consistent basis with 20 points, while rookie Rico Maierhofer added 13 points. Clif Brown came up short on the offensive end for the second straight game. After producing 17 in the Llamados' 108-102 win in Game 1, the Derby Ace import was only good for 11 this time, further reinforcing rumors that he may be on the way out. Marc Pingris, who played with a hurting thigh, and other banged-up players like Roger Yap, Raffy Reavies and Don Allado, could only combine for 19 points, while Peter June Simon, the hero in the Llamados' Game 1 victory, was held down to just two points. Worst was Nino Canaleta, who went 1-of-10 from the field, and finished with only three points. - Courtesy of RCJ, www.GMANews.TV
