Quarter-Finals Round 3: Rain or Shine - San Mig Coffee 117-111 OT
Date: July 14, 2010
Sol Mercado finally found his rhythm in overtime, firing two backbreaking three-pointers to power Rain or Shine to a 117-11 win over B-Meg Derby Ace and within reach of its second semifinals stint in the PBA Fiesta Cup on Wednesday night. The stocky Filipino-American guard only had seven points at the end of regulation, 102-102, but exploded for nine points in extra time as he almost single-handedly carried the Elasto Painters to the rousing win that gave them a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five quarterfinals series at the Araneta Coliseum. Another win in Friday night's Game 4 would make Rain or Shine only the third team in PBA history after Shell and San Miguel to make it to the Final Four after surviving the wild card. "I'm tired. Our heart won it," said Mercado, who registered a career-high 15 assists and came one rebound shy of coming through with a triple-double. Import Rod Nealy delivered another double-double for the Elasto Painters with 32 points and 10 rebounds while Jeff Chan added 22, with 19 of them coming in the first half - spiked by five three-pointers - when Rain or Shine run off to a 33-15 lead. But James Yap, who led the Llamados with a conference-high 34 points, fired 14 during that same stretch and led Derby's blazing comeback just before halftime, 53-46. Then, the Elasto Painters almost lost grip of the game if not for rookie Jervy Cruz's turn-around, one-handed shot with five seconds left off a broken play to send the game into overtime, 102-all. Cruz, continuing his brilliant performances in the playoffs, finished with 16 points. "Right now, we're maturing already," said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia. "The good thing is, we didn't stop playing. We got the momentum on our side. But the series is not yet over. Hopefully, we can pull it off." In overtime, Mercado took over. The Rain or Shine sophomore scored the Painters' first seven points in overtime, before the Llamados threatened for the last time at 113-11 on a Yap split free throw. But Chan answered back with two free throws and Yap missed back-to-back triples on separate possessions, which the Elasto Painters turned into four gift shots to seal the victory against Derby Ace. The Llamados played minus captain Kerby Raymundo (knee injury) and Marc Pingris (muscle tear on left thigh). *Courtesy of JVP, www.GMANews.TV
