Preliminary Round Day 3: ITALY - RUSSIA 86-87

Russia earned a narrow win over Italy in the final game of the preliminary round of U18 European Championship. Vladislav Trushkin knocked down 19 points and made 5 steals as Russia caught up with Italy at 2-1 record in Group C ladder. Italy however remained on top of the standings and advanced into the Qualifying round from the top place. Russia surged ahead early in the game. Italy soon recovered and the lead changed hands for several times before Loginov gave Russia a 23:22 advantage at the first pause. Russia opened the second quarter on a 10:1 run to boost the margin. But Alessandro Gentile fired three trebles in a row to keep Italy close to their opponents. Russia finished the first half up by 10 points 47:37. Vladislav Trushkin tipped off the second half with a three-pointer to enlarge the gap. The Azzurri quickly narrowed the distance as they headed into the fourth frame down by just 8 points 63:71. Giovanni Pini and Alessandro Gentile dragged Italy within only 2 points with 21 seconds remaining. But Alexander Varnakov proved deadly from the stripe as Russia sealed the win. Alexander Varnakov finished with 15 points, 6 assists, 3 boards and 3 steals for Russia. Sergey Karasev added 13 points in the victory. Alessandro Gentile had an outstanding performance for Italy as he notched 42 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Giorgio Sgobba and Giovanni Pini netted 14 points each in the loss.
