Quarter-Finals Day 7: SERBIA - SPAIN 92-89

We will have the new World Champions. Serbia have ended Spanish title defense hopes with a heart-stopping victory in the first quarterfinal today. Milos Teodosic hit a long three-pointer with less then four seconds to go in regulation to propel Serbia to a dramatic victory. Novica Velickovic set things rolling with a three-pointer. The teams eagerly traded baskets early in the game. Bjelica and Novica Velickovic triggered a 10:0 run for the Serbian team as they gained a 23:13 lead. But quick eight points from Juan Carlos Navarro helped Spain to trim a deficit at just four points 23:27 at the first break. Nenad Krstic opened the scoring in the second period but Alex Mumbru and Sergio Llull knocked down five consecutive points as Spain cut the distance at just one point 28:29. Marko Keselj, Milos Teodosic and Dusko Savanovic boosted the margin back to 7 points as Serbia stayed in control. Marc Gasol and Jorge Garbajosa narrowed the distance back to four points but Spain could not get any closer. Krstic and Marko Keselj ensured a 49:41 lead for Serbia at halftime. Spain stormed into the second half. They scored ten points in a row to take a 51:49 lead. Marko Keselj finally stopped the rot hitting a trey for Serbia. The teams exchanged the baskets then with neither side able to take a comfortable lead. Novica Velickovic and Dusko Savanovic gave the Serbian side a 65:62 lead. Fran Vazquez and Nenad Krstic traded baskets late in the period as Serbia entered the fourth period up by three points 67:64. Dusko Savanovic and Marko Keselj tipped off the fourth quarter with five points in a row as Serbia cleared off again. Fran Vazquez and Ricky Rubio tried to keep Spain within striking distance but Dusko Savanovic was unstoppable as he gave Dusan Ivkovic team a 77:69 advantage. Juan Carlos Navarro and Rudy Fernandez dragged Spain within three points but Nenad Krstic and Dusko Savanovic replied almost immediately to put Serbia up by 8 points 86:78. Jorge Garbajosa, Marc Gasol and Rudy Fernandez triggered a 6:0 run from the Spaniards as they narrowed the deficit to just two points with just over two minutes remaining. Marko Keselj drained an unbelievable three-pointer to put Serbia up by five but Juan Carlos Navarro and Marc Gasol replied with five consecutive points to draw things level at 89 with 25 seconds remaining. Milos Teodosic handled the ball in the dying seconds and then exploded from way downtown to put Serbia in front. Jorge Garbajosa committed a turnover in the next possession and Serbia celebrated a tough win at the end. Marko Keselj and Novica Velickovic knocked down 17 points each to lead Serbia. Dusko Savanovic added 15 points in the winning case. Juan Carlos Navarro replied with 27 points for Spain. Jorge Garbajosa notched 18 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.
