Regular Season Round 5: Groningen - Den Bosch 68-65

Date: October 19, 2010
How do you compensate for poor shooting and still win? By going after your own misses and making sure that the opposition misses too. And it also helps having a guy like Jason Ellis collecting your misses too. In the Martiniplaza tonight, in a knock down, drag out affair in the marquee matchup between two previous unbeatens GasTerra Flames Groningen and Eiffel Towers Den Bosch, the defending champions would have the last word, prevailing in the end by the score of 68-65. It was a game in which there were 15 lead changes, low shooting percentages, and Eiffel led by as much as 10 through the 3rd quarter. The Flames were held to a season-low 34.4% FG and shot once again poor from the charity stripe (only 17 for 32), but grabbed a season-high 58 rebounds and had a 24-9 bench scoring advantage. Eiffel gave the defending Dutch champs trouble in the 3rd quarter, with scores from Eiffel guards Rogier Jansen and Djoenie Steenvoorde pushing Eiffels lead to 47-37 at 3:31. The Flames cut Eiffels lead to six on two Matt Haraysz free throws at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the final quarter, the lead would change 7 times for both teams. However, the turning point of the game might have been at the 7:05 mark when Eiffel PG Frank Turner was called for a technical foul and Eiffel leading 53-51. From then on Gas Terra were more aggressive on the glass and the X-factor in the end was Jason Ellis. Ellis put back at 0:29 and two free throws at 0:09 remaining would seal the deal for the Flames. Matt Haraysz led Gas Terra with 15 pts. Jansen led the guests with 15 pts. The Flames remain undefeated at 4-0, while Eiffel falls to 3-1. *by Sanders Jackson
