Regular Season Round 9: Groningen - Leeuwarden 81-74
Date: November 7, 2010
In the Martiniplaza on Sunday afternoon, in the northern derby between Gas Terra Flames and DeFriesland Aris Leeuwarden, it was a game that was tense from beginning to the end, with the defending Dutch champs in the end with the upper hand, with offensive rebounding the deciding factor, winning by the score of 81-74. Despite the absence of Jason Ellis, the Flames snatched down 21 offensive rebounds to make up for poor three-point shooting (only 2 for 24 total). The guests did their best to put the pressure on the Flames early, being the aggressors in the passing lane, as well as attacking the Flames' guards, helping Aris to take a 19-17 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter, things would get out of hand, as there would be too many calls made on hand checking fouls, mainly at the expense of both teams. The lapse of control of the game from the officiating would result in tense moments in the game, leading to a technical foul called on Gas Terra Flames head coach Marco van den Berg. At that point of the game, the transparency from the officiating to the players and coaches was lost. The beauty of the game and less focusing on mistakes and blunders from the officiating was found wanting. Nevertheless to the credit of both teams, the opposing caches did their best to keep the players focused on the task at hand, not losing their cool. In the 3rd quarter, the Flames made their move, led by the inside tandem of Matt Haraysz and John Turek, who had a strong game (21 pts. total), who scored at will inside, and made open elbow jumpers. Haraysz came up with hustle plays on loose balls and offensive rebounds, making it difficult for Aris to defend him inside. Aris PG John Williams (183-G-84, agency: R.H.Consultancy, college: Bryant) and Manny Adako did their best to keep Aris close, but Donar came up everytime with an answer, with a Matthew Otten 8-foot baseline shot at the buzzer pushing Donar's lead to 66-57 at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, Aris kept the pressure on the Flames, with Williams continuing to get into the lane for scores, but Matt Bauscher also found his way in te lane, with a layup making it 76-69. The Flames' defense forced Aris into making difficult shot attempts, and offensive rebounds from the Flames also made the difference. A Todd Brown free throw made it 76-72 for the Flames, but free throws by Steve Ross, Jason Dourisseau and Robby Bostain sealed the win for the Flames. Turek led all scorers with 21 pts, with Haraysz adding 16. Williams led Aris with 16 pts. Dourisseau did a good job of shutting down Aris leading scorer Brown, holding him to only 6 field goal attempts. With the win, Gas Terra Flames remain unblemished at 9-0, while De Friesland Aris falls to 4-5. *by Sanders Jackson
