Qualifying Round Round 1: IRAN - PHILIPPINES 65-48

Iran opened their Asian games last night in China. In the opener Iran outscored Philippines 65:48 in the defensive style of the Men's Preliminary Round in Group F. Iran started well and clinched the first victory at the Huangpu Gymnasium. It was a good start for Iran that took 17-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of the game. The favorites controlled the half and proved their superiority also in the second frame. After 18-10 the board showed 35:20 at the halftime. Philippines actually scored another 10 points in the third frame as well and again allowed the opponents to go on a bigger advantage. After 12-10 in the period Iran improved to 17-point deficit. In the last quarter both squads nailed 18 points each that brought the total result in the game. Sohrabnejad Hamed poured in 11 points for the winners and Davari Javad as well as Davoudi Aren added 10 each. Sahakian Oshin ended up with 9 points for the first win of his team. Tiu Chris responded with 14 points in the losing effort and Williams Kelly collected 8 points and 13 rebounds. In day 2 Iran will face Japan that overcame Chinese Taipei 63:57. Philippines will play against Qatar that rolled over India in the opener.
