Regular Season Round 4: Iowa E. - Santa Cruz W. 111-103
Date: November 22, 2010
Don’t let his name fool you. Shy Ely has a bit of a swagger this season. It was evident in the third quarter Monday night when he drew a technical foul for sprinting downcourt after being whistled for a reach-in foul he felt was undeserved. And it was even more apparent late in the fourth quarter when the Iowa Energy, needing their biggest shot of the night, turned to Ely. He responded with a 3-pointer that helped Iowa hold off the Dakota Wizards 111-103 before an announced crowd of 3,171 at Wells Fargo Arena. “I went home this summer to Indianapolis, and just worked my butt off. I took a lot of shots, and worked out nearly every day, which just builds your confidence,” said Ely, who scored 12 points after averaging 3.8 last season as a little-used Energy rookie. His biggest basket was a 3 from the right corner that came with 17 seconds left on the shot clock and Iowa (3-0) leading 106-100. “It was a skip pass,” Ely said. “That’s what I’ve been doing the whole summer is working on my 3-ball. I was confident, no hesitation. I love being in the game at the end now. It shows that coach (Nick Nurse) trusts me a little bit more. Hopefully, I can keep making good plays.” Courtney Sims had 26 points and 11 rebounds for Iowa and Kyle Weaver added 22 points, including a trio of fourth-quarter 3-pointers. Dakota (0-3) helped Iowa out by missing 13 of 37 free-throw attempts. Ely was one of three Energy players to pick up a technical, part of the NBA’s crackdown on arguing with referees. Point guard Curtis Stinson was whistled for one when he thrust his fist through the air after teammate Chris Lofton made a layup. Stinson assumed Lofton was fouled on the play and shouted, “And one.” Not so fast. The referee called it an “air punch,” which is now illegal. “The ref knows it wasn’t anything against him,” a contrite Stinson said. “He said he didn’t want to give it to me, but the rules are the rules. It’s tough. You’ve got to hold your emotions in in certain cases. Next time, you’ve got to know, you just need to turn your back and walk away.” Stinson turned in a lot of positive plays as well, scoring 20 points with 13 assists. Twice, he hit jump shots just ahead of the shot clock, something at which the veteran from Iowa State excels. “I keep glancing at it, glancing at it,” Stinson said of the shot clock. “You wait to the 4-second mark and then you make your move. I try to keep the guy on his heels, make another move, look at the clock, then make the shot.” *COurtesy of www.desmoinesregister.com
