Penarol got to the winning start of their Liga Americas campaign. The hosts held off Espartanos in Group A action in Mar del Plata. Leonardo Gutierrez came up with 27 points to pace the charge. Penarol looked dominant from start to finish in this one. The Argentinean side unloaded 27 points in the opening quarter to take a 9-point lead. Espartanos slowed their opponents down in the second quarter. Led by Hector Romero the Venezuelan champions got within 7 points at the interval. But the third term belonged to the hosts. Penarol outscored the visitors to enter the final period up by comfortable 15 points. Penarol cruised in the final quarter. They unleashed 29 points and celebrated the initial win. Kyle Lamonte tallied 19 points, 6 assists and 4 boards for Penarol. Pablo Sebastian Rodriguez added 12 points in the victory. Hector Romero replied with 19 points and 8 rebounds for Espartanos. Francisco Centeno provided 11 points in the loss.
