Regular Season Round 19: Springfield A. - Austin T. 104-108 OT2

Date: December 11, 2010
The Austin Toros narrowly escaped with the win Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Springfield Armor 108-104 in double overtime at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. Austin took over in the second overtime thanks to Lance Thomas, who proved to be the difference maker down the stretch for the Toros. In the second overtime, Thomas drained two free throws to give the Toros the lead, then added an acrobatic tip-in to extend the advantage. “He’s probably our best energy guy,” Toros head coach Brad Jones said. “He had some hustle plays that really helped us get the win.” Thomas also made the biggest impact in the first overtime. The former Duke star converted on a slam off a nice pass from Carldell ‘Squeaky’ Johnson with .1 seconds remaining to tie the game at 100 and send the game into the second and final overtime period. The Toros jumped out to a 25-15 lead after one quarter and looked poised to race past the Armor with ease, but in the second half, the Armor slowly whittled away at the deficit. “I told them at halftime that I knew they were going to come out and give us a good shot,” Jones said.” The Armor cut the lead to 4 entering the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Armor took their first lead of the game with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. After the Toros responded to take a three-point lead, the Armor forced the game into overtime on a JamesOn Curry three with nine seconds left in the game. The Toros were led by Kevin Palmer who came off the bench to score 24 and Marcus Cousin with 22 points. Thomas finished with 14 points and 1 rebound shy of a double-double. Curry scored 21 for the Armor, while Tre Whitted provided good minutes off the bench with 16 points. Austin improves to 6-5 on the year and will play host to the Bakersfield Jam on Wednesday, December 15th. The Armor, losers of their last 4, fell to 3-6. The Armor return to action at the MassMutual Center on Friday Dec. 17th to take on the Maine Red Claws. *Courtesy of wwlp.com
