Regular Season Round 51: Santa Cruz W. - Idaho S. 95-103
Date: January 17, 2011
After dropping a second straight home game to the short-handed Idaho Stampede on Monday night, 103-95, the Dakota Wizards have to be wondering who they can beat. Even after the weekend sweep of the Wizards, the Stampede (8-15) still has the worst record in the West Conference. And Idaho won both games despite having two of its top four scorers - Carlos Wheeler and Luke Jackson - missing both games. An injury to Eric Boateng on Sunday left Idaho with a seven-man lineup Monday. But Cedric Jackson again flirted with a triple-double - 20 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Jermareo Davidson kicked in 18 points and 12 rebounds. And three-time NBA all-star Antoine Walker had 16 points, 11 in the second half. The Wizards (7-18) got another great game from Mike Hall. For the second straight day Hall set a season-high in scoring, pouring in 27, and he grabbed 11 rebounds. But he just didn't get enough help. "He's the only one that's carrying us," a frustrated Wizards coach Rory White said. "If you look across the board - Anthony Goods, Chris Johnson, Mike Anderson, Renaldo Major - we're not getting anything." Actually, Major had a pretty good night. The veteran forward scored 20 points - topping the 2,500 mark for his Wizards' career - and grabbed nine rebounds. He shot 7-for-14 and committed no turnovers. But Dakota's guards were badly outplayed, even with the return of Maurice Baker. Idaho's three guards - Jackson, Seth Tarver and Lance Hurdle - outscored Darren Cooper, Goods and Baker 48-31. More important, they outshot their Wizards counterparts 56.7 percent (17 for 30) to 32.4 percent (11 for 34). "We're not making shots, and defensively we're not there, either," White said. "We're letting guys penetrate to the rim. Our rotations are totally off." Despite all that, the Wizards had a chance to win, just as they did on Sunday. The Wizards trailed 73-70 early in the fourth quarter when they had a brief meltdown. A foul was called on Anderson, then Baker was given a technical. While the Stampede was shooting the ensuing free throws, Anderson also got T'd up. After all the freebies were taken, the Wizards trailed 78-70, but responded by going on an 11-2 tear. Major put the Wizards on top with a three-point play, then followed it with a jumper. But that was as good as it would get for the Wizards. The Stampede answered with three critical 3-pointers. The first, by Willie Jenkins, tied the game at 81 and slowed Dakota's momentum. The second, by Hurdle, put Idaho in control, 88-82. The third, again by Jenkins, effectively put the game out of reach (99-91). Baker was disappointing in his return. Although he did have six assists, he was 1-for-6 from the floor and committed four turnovers. "We're trying to get his feet wet," White said. "He missed some shots, too. That's just normal. Hopefully he gets a couple of days of practice and we get him in the lineup this weekend and he can help us a little bit more." The game left the Wizards 1-2 on their franchise record 10-game homestand. They'll try to regroup before Friday's game against Rio Grande Valley. "Tomorrow, I just told them I want everybody to get away from basketball - don't even come into the gym," White said. "Let's just refocus. ... I know they're mentally tired, but you've still got to focus. Especially at home, you've got to focus and win games." n NOTES: Forward Walter Sharpe was not with the team Monday. White said that he told Sharpe not to dress for the game. He has not been waived yet - a trade is possible - and White said Sharpe's status will likely be determined after he talks to him today. The assignment of Hamady N'Diaye, and before, DeMarre Carroll, cut into Sharpe's minutes. "It boils down to, like every player, playing time. When you get guys sent down from the NBA, you've got to get them minutes." *Courtesy of www.bismarcktribune.com
