Regular Season Round 17: Znicz Basket - Astoria Bydg. 80-78

Fourteenth-ranked Astoria (4-13) was very close to win a game against ninth ranked MKS Znicz Basket (9-8) in Pruszkow. MKS Znicz Basket managed to secure only two-point victory 80-78. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Astoria won fourth quarter 26-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Astoria was plagued by 31 personal fouls down the stretch. Naturalized American guard Janavor Weatherspoon (186-80, college: Oklahoma St., agency: Promotex) stepped up and scored 14 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and forward Wojciech Fras (203-91) chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds. Power forward Igor Trela (206-89) responded with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds and guard Mateusz Bierwagen (194-88) scored 13 points and 7 rebounds. Four MKS Znicz Basket and five Astoria players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. MKS Znicz Basket moved-up to eighth place. Newly promoted Astoria keeps the fourteenth position with 13 games lost. They share it with Start Lublin and Polonia 2011. MKS Znicz Basket will play against AZS Szczecin (#11) on the road in the next round. Astoria will play against Olimp MKS Start Lublin and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
