Regular Season Round 87: Denver N. - LA Lakers 97-107
Date: January 21, 2011
The two-time defending NBA champion Lakers have opted to gloss over key details too often this season. They showed Friday night in beating the Denver Nuggets, 107-97, that they do remember the diligence it takes to win. Ron Artest didn’t go overboard with his challenge of defending Carmelo Anthony, and Artest produced 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting in 26 minutes, with Luke Walton doing much the same as Artest’s fill-in. Anthony had 23 points on 10-0f-24 shooting, most of his contribution coming late. Andrew Bynum didn’t let an 0-for-4 start trying to shoot with a new sleeve over his hyperextended right elbow stop him from conscientiously and carefully challenging shot after shot from Denver’s drivers despite one early foul. Kobe Bryant took over in the third quarter with 14 points but also four assists, keeping his teammates involved while he was filling it up. Bryant also could be seen telling his team to stay focused on defensive execution midway through the fourth quarter. The Lakers built their lead to double digits, and unlike in so many games this season, they didn’t relax. They were never threatened down the stretch and scored a rare road victory over a winning team. Despite their distractions from Anthony trade talk, the Nuggets came in at 24-17. Bynum (17 points), Bryant (18), Lamar Odom (18), Artest (19) and Pau Gasol (19) all had their moments in a game that reflected how the Lakers can prey on opponents with their size advantage. They outrebounded the Nuggets, 47-27. *Courtesy of https://lakers.ocregister.com
