Regular Season Round 56: Santa Cruz W. - Rio Grande VV 101-114

Date: January 22, 2011
In good years and bad, the Dakota Wizards have always been able to defend their home court. Not this season. For the second night in a row, the Wizards had the defending D-League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers down, but couldn't keep them there, falling 114-101 on Saturday night. It was the fourth straight home loss for the Wizards, who fell to 7-20. It also dropped their record at the Civic Center to 3-9, matching the franchise record for most home losses in a season. In their 16 seasons, the Wizards have never had a losing record at home. "It's the mental mistakes that are killing us," Wizards coach Rory White said. "... I've just got to keep coaching them. That's why I'm here. That's why I've got to just keep trying to get them to learn that when the game gets tough, you can't get nervous and you can't panic. "I think sometimes we do that. We get a little nervous, we get a little gun-shy and we get hesitant." Chris Johnson had a monster game for the Wizards, scoring a season-high 34 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. He also had four blocks and four steals. Johnson, who was coming off a season-worst two-point performance on Friday, recorded his 13th double-double. He had seven dunks. Johnson came out breathing fire, slamming home three of Dakota's first four baskets. Before 10 minutes had elapsed Johnson already had five dunks, accounting for most of his 11 points, plus five rebounds and three blocks. He took a breather at that point, having led the Wizards to a 23-13 lead. That allowed White to give his bench some extra playing time, and the reserves help push the lead out to 46-32. "I wanted to get him started (early)," White said. "He struggled the last couple of games. ... I wanted to get some dunks for him to get him going." The Vipers were without guard Mustafa Shakur, who was called up by the NBA's Washington Wizards, and it showed early. But eventually they found their rhythm behind Ish Smith, who is on assignment from the Houston Rockets. Smith finished with 11 points, 10 assists and five rebounds. "You know what, Shakur getting called up, that's my worst nightmare," White said. "Because they've got Smith, and he pushes the ball right away. That's what he does. He keeps you on your heels. They just waited for us to miss a shot, then, bam! They're going to the other end." The Vipers knocked down four 3-pointers in the latter stages of the first half, two of them from Richard Roby, and managed to pull within 57-53 by intermission. Rio Grande Valley never led in the first half, but a layup by Smith put the Vipers on top 60-59 early in the third quarter. The teams swapped the lead seven times in the period and began the fourth with Rio Grande Valley clinging to an 81-79 advantage. The teams kept swapping the lead until midway through the fourth quarter, when Mouhammad Faye put the Vipers up 92-91 with a pair of free throws. That sparked a 9-2 run, and the Vipers never trailed again. Roby led the Vipers with 22 points. Terrel Harris and Jerel McNeal scored 20 each, while Jeff Adrien had 19 points and 13 rebounds. The Wizards got 23 points and eight assists from Maurice Baker, who was playing with bruised ribs. But the only other Dakota player to hit double figures was Anthony Goods, and he shot 2-for-14 from the floor. The Wizards are now 1-4 on their franchise record 10-game homestand. "It sounds like a broken record, but we're in every game. We've got to find a way as a group, starting with me, to finish games." *Courtesy of www.bismarcktribune.com
