Regular Season Round 60: Austin T. - Z*N.Mexico T. 93-104
Date: January 27, 2011
The Austin Toros could not defend the paint , and New Mexico held a comfortable margin through most of the second half of a 104-93 Thunderbirds victory Thursday night at the Cedar Park Center. When Austin's Aubrey Coleman drove the lane for a dunk late in the fourth quarter, the T-Birds' lead was cut to 93-89. That was as close as the Toros would get. New Mexico, led by Dar Tucker's 25 points, outscored the Toros 11-4 the rest of the way. Lance Thomas had a solid game with 15 points and nine rebounds for the Toros, but said they lacked intensity on defense. "We were a step slow on defense," Thomas said. "They exploited it. They got to the paint when they wanted. They brought the fight to us first ." Austin had one good run in the second half . After falling to 62-52 in the third quarter, the Toros' 10-0 run tied the game, and Michael Joiner's inside jumper gave Austin a temporary lead late in the quarter. The Toros shot just 31 percent in the first half . "When you miss so many shots, they're going to have a chance to get to the basket," head coach Brad Jones said. "I thought we didn't sustain enough energy throughout the game." Spurs draft pick James Anderson had a good effort in limited minutes, with 17 points. Jones said the 16 minutes Anderson played were about all he could handle while coming back from a stress fracture in his ankle. Leo Lyons' three-pointer at the end of the first quarter gave the Toros their first lead of the game at 22-21. New Mexico outscored the Toros by eight in the second quarter and had all the momentum going into the half. The Toros hit the floor for a rematch with New Mexico on Saturday at noon. *Courteys of www.statesman.com
