Regular Season Round 94: Phoenix Suns - Boston C. 88-71
Date: January 28, 2011
A year ago Friday night, the Suns had lost 18 of their past 30 games, Amare Stoudemire's effort was being questioned by teammates, and Jason Richardson had gone colder than the San Francisco Peaks' wind. Then the Suns did something drastically different for a night (sitting Stoudemire and Richardson for the fourth quarter in a win over Dallas) and the rest of the season (a 28-7 close). A year later, the Suns did something drastic again to offer up a thread of hope for a turning point in their season. They not only pounced on the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Celtics like no team had this season, but they downed them with defense in a 88-71 victory Friday night at US Airways Center. The Suns won with a rediscovered defense, keeping the league's top-shooting team to a Suns opponent low and Celtics season low 34.2 percent shooting and 19 turnovers. The Suns had their best first quarter in two months, taking a 30-16 lead when Marcin Gortat made his second career three-pointer at the buzzer. The Suns did not relent, taking the lead to 17 twice in the second quarter against a Boston team that had not been down by that much at any point this season. Gortat had career highs of 19 points and 17 rebounds and his fourth double-double in the past six games, and Steve Nash finished with 13 points and 10 assists. The Celtics (35-11) had easy excuses and distractions. They had arrived at their hotel at 4 a.m. Friday after playing in Portland on Thursday night. Paul Pierce entered the game questionable because of ankle and knee injuries. Glen Davis (hamstring strain) and coach Doc Rivers (ejection) did not last the first half. *Courtesy of https://azstarnet.com
