Regular Season Round 16: Peristeri GS - Panathinaikos 64-89
Date: February 6, 2011
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Athens: Panathinaikos (#2) and Peristeri GS (#8). Peristeri GS was smashed at home by 25 points 64-89 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Panathinaikos. Peristeri GS was better in fourth quarter 21-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Panathinaikos dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Peristeri GS's 26 and made 16-of-17 charity shots (94.1 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Peristeri GS 39-23 including a 27-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. The winners were led by international guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) who scored that evening 11 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists and Serbian guard Milenko Tepic (198-87, agency: Beo Basket) supported him with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Even 23 points by Serbian forward Branko Jorovic (205-81, agency: Beo Basket) did not help to save the game for Peristeri GS. Antiguan-American power forward Kurt Looby (208-84, college: Iowa) added 8 points and 7 rebounds for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Panathinaikos have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position with 15-1 record behind leader Olympiakos. Peristeri GS at the other side keeps the eighth place with nine games lost. They share the position with Panionios and Ikaros. Panathinaikos will play against VAP Kolossos (#6) in Rodou in the next round. Peristeri GS will play on the road against Iraklis in Thessaloniki and hopes to get back on the winning track.
