Regular Season Round 73: Austin T. - Rio Grande VV 97-117
Date: February 10, 2011
The Austin Toros got off to a bad start on Thursday against Rio Grande Valley and could never fully recover, losing their fourth straight game, 117-97. In the first quarter, the Toros shot 21 percent while the Vipers were red-hot (65 percent). " We just can't seem to get consistency as a group," Toros coach Brad Jones said. " I'm continually putting guys in the game to see who can be consistent and that's not a good thing." Rio Grande Valley only had eight players travel with the team, and seven scored in double figures, led by Terrel Harris with 19. Austin fell behind 45-32 midway through the second quarter before going on a 15-6 run to get back into the game. Kevin Palmer's three-pointer with 1:30 left in the first half brought the Toros within four points at 51-47. Rio Grande Valley started the second half on a 5-0 run and took control, keeping a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The Vipers shot 53 percent and outrebounded Austin 50-38. "We've got to figure out how to put together stops, like two and three possessions at a time," Austin's Squeaky Johnson said. Johnson had 15 points and six assists. Eric Boateng replaced leading scorer Marcus Cousin, who was out with mononucleosis. Boateng had four points and seven rebounds. Ex-Longhorn Connor Atchley, returning to the Austin area as a member of the Vipers, had 16 points and four rebounds. His three-pointer with three minutes left in the third quarter gave his team its biggest lead to that point, 82-64. " I had a pretty good game, I hit some open shots and moved the ball a lot, the kind of stuff I like to do," Atchley said. These teams play again on Saturday at noon at the Cedar Park Center. *Courtesy of www.statesman.com
