Regular Season Round 74: Maine RC - Springfield A. 90-80

Date: February 11, 2011
It should have been a night the Springfield Armor could savor. And it would have been, too, if they had been able to hang on to an 11-point lead. Not just one of them, but a pair. As it was, the Armor fell to the Maine Red Claws, 90-80, before a sellout crowd of 3,045 at the Portland Expo. Springfield is 0-9 in two seasons worth of trips here, although it will have another opportunity on Sunday to finally taste victory here. Leading by one point after three quarters, the Armor fell hard in the fourth quarter beneath the weight of a 13-2 Red Claw run. Maine's DeShawn Sims led all scores with 25 points, and helped send the Armor to their seventh loss in their last eight tries, the exception being their 96-86 win over Maine on Thursday at the MassMutual Center. This one started far differently that it began. The Armor enjoyed a strong first half, and led 29-24 after the first quarter, then took a 51-41 advantage into halftime. After trailing in the early moments, Springfield seized the lead with an 11-0 run that put the Armor up 18-10 with 4:59 left in the first quarter. Newly signed small forward Tony Bobbitt, a former Red Claw, helped fuel the run with a long three-pointer after taking a no-look feed from JamesOn Curry (team high 18 points). Maine cut the margin to two points, 32-20, early in the second quarter, but the Armor promptly ran off a 13-4 skein that featured points contributions from five different players. Springfield fell apart in the third quarter, losing the lead altogether in the face of an 18-4 Red Claw run. The Armor managed to stop the bleeding, and by the end of the quarter, had eased back in front, 66-65. For the Armor, however, was as good as it would get. *Courtesy of www.masslive.com
