Regular Season Round 78: Sioux Falls S. - Iowa E. 129-128
Date: February 15, 2011
Midweek game, down one injured all-star and 15 points against the best team in the NBA D-League - nobody would have faulted the last-place Skyforce for packing it in for the final quarter-and-a-half Tuesday night. Instead, they created the unequivocal highlight of a difficult season. Down by as many as 15 in the third quarter, Sioux Falls got a contested 3-pointer from Patrick Ewing Jr. with 5.8 seconds remaining to stun Iowa 129-128 at the Arena. Yes, a forward not known for his touch hit a deep shot to propel the Skyforce to a comeback win, their sixth victory in 30 tries coming against an Energy club that came in at 25-9. There haven't been many nights like this at the Arena of late. "We stayed with the fight tonight," said Force guard David Bailey, who became the franchise leader in games played (188) and moved into second-place in career scoring by putting up 27 points. "We all scrapped on defense, we helped each other out defensively in the second half and we made shots." That last part of that statement was more evident. Sioux Falls scored 71 in the second half en route to setting a season high for points. Every last one was necessary against the highest-scoring - and best rebounding - team in the league. Iowa tallied 73 in the first half. Two 10-0 runs - one late in the third, the next to start the fourth - carried the hosts from an 87-72 hole to a 105-98 advantage. Iowa recovered to regain the lead and Sioux Falls followed suit - there were nine lead changes and five ties in the frantic fourth quarter. The Energy took a 128-126 edge with 18 seconds remaining on a baseline bankshot by standout guard Othyus Jeffers, but Ewing answered with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. It went down as the game winner after Iowa guard Curtis Stinson - who finished with a team-high 29 points - slipped and fell, committing a traveling violation on the ensuing possession. "For coach, the big thing was (when) it comes down to close games against good teams, we're going to go for the win," said Ewing Jr., who finished with 27 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists. "Once I caught the ball I knew I was going to shoot it - it was just a matter of when I was going to shoot it." He tried to get the defender in the air to draw a foul, but couldn't and then shot the ball anyway just his 11th 3-point try in eight games with the team. Six Skyforce players scored in double figures, including three subs, and the squad went 26 of 28 from the line. The contributions of forward Raymond Sykes were as important as any, according to coach Mo McHone. He put up 19 points - nine in the pivotal third quarter - with seven rebounds, filling in for injured all-star center Dexter Pittman. The 6-foot-11, 300-pound Pittman, on loan from the Miami Heat, underwent successful right knee surgery on Tuesday in Florida to repair damage done Saturday in a loss to Idaho. He's expected to miss 5-6 weeks, meaning Sioux Falls will have to made due without him for much of the rest of the season. "When you lose a guy like Dexter, it's time for somebody else to step up," McHone said. "This is Ray's opportunity to show what he can do." Sioux Falls won't have to wait long for an opportunity to show its stuff again, hosting Tulsa - situated atop the West Conference at 23-10 and led by former Skyforce coach Nate Tibbetts - at 7 tonight. Whatever happens, it'll be hard-pressed to top Tuesday. "It reminded me of the old CBA days," McHone said, "because you look up in the third quarter and the score's 98-95 - and we're doing everything we can defensively to stop them." *Courtesy of www.argusleader.com
