Regular Season Round 82: Ft.Wayne MA - Springfield A. 114-108 OT

Date: February 23, 2011
The Springfield Armor had to endure a canceled flight, lost baggage, a lost coach and three technical fouls in its NBA D-League trip to Fort Wayne. The result Wednesday night was a 114-108 overtime loss to the Mad Ants in a game that the Armor once led by 15 points. It was the sixth straight road loss for the Armor (10-24) and their ninth loss in their last 10 games overall. The Armor, whose scheduled game Tuesday with the Mad Ants was postponed until Wednesday because the team’s luggage was left behind in Chicago when their connecting flight was canceled, play the Mad Ants again Thursday night in Fort Wayne. JamesOn Curry scored a game-high 34 points, including the Armor’s only three points in overtime. However, Springfield’s night ended with Gavin Edwards missing a 3-point shot with 1 second left in overtime, and turning around in frustration as the ball didn’t hit the rim. The Armor was ahead by seven points when head coach Dee Brown was called for consecutive technical fouls by referee Karl Lane and ejected from the game with 7:12 left in the third quarter. Despite losing a 15-point lead in the second half, the Armor had taken a three-point lead on two free throws by Curry with 15.8 seconds left. But Fort Wayne’s Corey Allmond (16 points) hit a 3-point shot with 10 seconds left as he fell backwards, tying the score at 105. Fort Wayne’s Roderick Wilmont, who scored 17 points, hit two baskets in the overtime. The Mad Ants scored the final five points in OT after Curry hit a 3-pointer in the first minute. Eugene Spates, a former Maine Red Claw playing his first game for the Armor since being acquired in a trade last week, scored 21 points. Edwards and Scottie Reynolds each scored 11. Curry’s hot shooting in the first quarter sent the Armor out in front early. Curry, the Armor’s leading scorer with a 16.9 points-per-game average and the team’s first draft pick in 2009, hit seven of eight shots in the first quarter and scored 15 points. The Armor pushed ahead by 11 points in the second quarter and by 15 early in the third, taking advantage of sloppy offensive play by the Mad Ants. Fort Wayne had 15 turnovers in the first half. Three Armor players, including Curry, had a pair of steals in the first half. After an 8-0 run in the third quarter by Fort Wayne caused Armor coach Dee Brown to call a timeout, he also used the time to question the officiating. Within a few seconds, Brown was called for a technical foul. And when he argued about that call, he was called for another technical and ejected from the game. *Courtesy of www.masslive.com
