Regular Season Round 120: Miami Heat - New York K. 86-91
Date: February 27, 2011
Basketball fans can only hope that the stars align and give us a playoff series between the Heat and Knicks. Until then, South Florida and New York will have to settle for Sunday night — the final game between the two teams this regular season but the first meeting since the Knicks added Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups in an attempt to challenge Miami. New York ran past the Heat on Sunday, seemingly ahead of even its own schedule to rebuild the team and contend for a title. The Knicks defeated the Heat 91-86 in the best crowd atmosphere all season at AmericanAirlines Arena. The crowd began chanting “New York [stinks]!” with four minutes to play. Around the same time, LeBron James got in the face of director Spike Lee during a hotly debated play. And that was only the start of a fantastic finish. The sellout crowd left mostly unhappy, although there were enough Knicks fans present on Sunday night to make themselves known. The Heat blew a six-point lead in the final three minutes on a pair of costly turnovers by LeBron James and Chris Bosh. The Heat is 12-15 against teams with winning records and 2-2 against the Knicks this season. “As painful as this is right now, there will be a time when we break through and we’re able to execute and win a game like this against a quality opponent going down the stretch,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “What you hope is the pain of a game like this resonates enough to make a change and that’s what we need to do.” The Knicks led 87-86 with three seconds to play when, following a timeout, James drove to the basket with a chance to win but was denied by a rejection from Amare Stoudemire. “I feel like I got enough room around but [Stoudemire] got a piece of it,” James said. With five all-stars on the floor, many expected Sunday’s game to be heavy on offense but it was key defensive stops by the Knicks that decided the outcome. Carmelo Anthony’s move from Denver to New York turned an already important game between the Heat and Knicks into a must-see event but it was guard Chauncey Billups who had the biggest impact down the stretch. Billups led the Knicks with seven points in the fourth quarter, made a three-pointer to give New York the lead with one minute left, and came away with the two steals against James and Bosh that will linger for some time. “He’s been what he has been doing now for several years and that’s why I think it’s an absolute mockery to say he was a throw-in on that deal,” Spoelstra said. “He’s one of not only the top point guards in the league but one of the ultimate winners.” Billups’ first steal—a strip against James — allowed the Knicks to cut the Heat’s lead to 84-82. Billups drained his three-pointer with 1:01 left and then stole a poor pass by Bosh with 43.2 seconds left to help seal the win for the Knicks. “People forget about [Billups] but players never do,” James said. “That’s why his nickname is big shot.” James led the Heat with 27 points on 10 of 20 shooting. After struggling for nearly two consecutive games, Bosh redeemed himself with a solid outing. He finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Wade had 12 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Anthony, playing in his third game with the Knicks, led New York with 29 points. From the beginning, Sunday night’s atmosphere was among the best this season for AmericanAirlines Arena and James did his part in the first quarter to keep the sold-out crowd buzzing. His offensive sequence to begin the game was so awe-inspiring even Lee had to lean back in his chair and gawk with excitement. *Courtesy of www.miamiherald.com
