Regular Season Round 93: Erie Bay H. - Springfield A. 101-92
Date: March 8, 2011
The Erie BayHawks sure made things interesting for the thousands of children who watched Tuesday morning's 101-92 victory against the Springfield Armor at Tullio Arena. Ahead by as many as 32 points, the BayHawks (26-13) found themselves in a tussle late against the Armor (11-29) before 5,203 fans. "We should have blown them out earlier," Erie forward Ivan Johnson said. Johnson scored a game-high 27 points to lead Erie in its Kids School Jams game, attended by throngs of cheering students from schools throughout the area. Rookie forward Tasmin Mitchell scored 20 points while rookie point guard Jermaine Beal added a career-high 19 points. "It was good," Mitchell said about the kids' presence. "They brought their energy. We wanted to win for them." Erie is one victory away from tying a franchise record for wins in a season. The BayHawks won 27 games and made the D-League playoffs in 2008-09. "We're happy to get a win and move on to the next one," Erie coach Jay Larranaga said. With just 11 wins, Springfield is not in playoff contention, but it made things difficult for Erie in the fourth quarter. The Armor scored 48 fourth-quarter points and had cut Erie's big lead to nine, 99-90, with 25.9 seconds left in the game. "We got relaxed," Mitchell said. "We relaxed a little bit." The BayHawks struggled to handle full-court pressure defense for a third consecutive game. Tulsa's full-court trap gave the BayHawks problems in its two games it split against Erie. On Tuesday, Erie had nine of its 21 turnovers in the fourth quarter. The Armor attempted 13 more shots from the field than Erie in the final quarter, going 20-of-27 from the field. "(The trap) sped them up and we got extra possessions," Armor guard JamesOn Curry said. Erie has been without its starting point guard, Blake Ahearn, who has missed three straight games since hurting his right hip against Iowa. Ahearn is hopeful he'll play in Thursday night's game against Maine at Tullio Arena. "I want to play," Ahearn said. "If I can, I will. Hopefully the workout (today) doesn't spring anything new on me." Erik Daniels, who had 10 points in his return to Erie, is looking to help the BayHawks if teams continue to press them. Daniels was a first-team all-D-League pick for the franchise in 2009. "We have to work on that in practice," the veteran forward said. "Hopefully I can hurry up and get in shape so I can help the guys in the fourth quarter." For the first three quarters, Erie dominated Springfield. The BayHawks limited the Armor to 28 first-half points and posted their biggest lead, 66-34, with 4 minutes, 37 seconds left in the third quarter. "Our offense really struggled and that kind of really dictated our defense a little bit," said Armor forward Jarvis Gunter, who scored nine points in his return to Erie. Gunter was waived by the BayHawks in December. In the first half, Springfield shot just 23.5 percent and its top scorers, Curry and rookie point guard Scottie Reynolds, combined for just one point. Curry, who leads the team in scoring at 16.9 points a game, had the one point. Reynolds came in averaging 13.2 points, but like Curry was 0-of-3 from the field. "We were just flat," Curry said. "We weren't ready to play at all." Curry ended the game with just three points while Reynolds scored all 18 of his points in the second half. *Courtesy of www.goerie.com
