Regular Season Round 102: Ft.Wayne MA - Springfield A. 106-105

Date: March 17, 2011
With five minutes to go in their NBA D-League game Thursday night, the Springfield Armor were cruising. Or so it appeared. Two 3-pointers by Lance Hurdle and a basket by New Jersey Net prospect Ben Uzoh had sparked the Armor to an eight-point run and given them a 94-87 lead. The crowd of 2,377 at Allen County Memorial Coliseum was silenced. Mad Ants coach Joey Meyer was mad enough, shaking his head and calling for a timeout. Then, as it has happened so many times this season for the Armor, their lead evaporated, this time into a 106-105 loss on a night when rookie Jerry Smith scored a career-high and game-high 33 points. “We don’t know how to have that killer blow. We don’t have that knockout punch,” said Armor head coach Dee Brown. “All we needed was a couple of stops.” In addition to Smith’s 33 points on 11-of-14 shooting, Hurdle scored 28, the most for him as an Armor player since being acquired in a Feb. 28 trade with Idaho. Uzoh, a point guard who was assigned to the Armor from the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday, scored seven points and had a team-high six assists in 24 minutes. “It was definitely a winnable game,” Uzoh said. “We’ve got to get stops and we’ve got to take care of the ball.” Darnell Lazare, whose two free throws with 2:14 left gave Fort Wayne the lead for good, led the Mad Ants with 28 points. The Armor (11-32) will play the Mad Ants (20-23) again Saturday night at Fort Wayne in a 7:30 p.m. game that will be televised by Versus on a tape delay at 11 p.m. After falling behind by seven points, the Mad Ants emerged from the timeout and scored seven consecutive points in less than two minutes, tying the score at 94 with 3:24 left on a three-point play by Chris Kramer (20 points, game-high eight assists). Ten of Kramer’s points came from the free-throw line, where the Mad Ants had 38 tries on 29 Springfield fouls. The Armor’s loss, which was their seventh straight this season to Fort Wayne, ruined a highlight reel-type night for Smith. He scored 22 points in the second quarter alone, his only miss in 10 shots coming on a desperation 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the first half. He hit 3-pointers to end the third quarter and the game. *Courtesy of www.masslive.com
