There was a surprise result when eighth ranked BC Nizhny Novgorod (6-12) edged at home higher ranked Spartak St.Petersburg (11-7) 75-72 on Saturday. Spartak St.Petersburg trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 25-16 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 72-75 at the end of the game. BC Nizhny Novgorod made 27-of-35 free shots (77.1 percent) during the game. Spartak St.Petersburg was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for Serbian guard Ivan Paunic (194-87, agency: Beo Basket) who led his team to a victory with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Oleg Baranov (202-82) contributed with 17 points for the winners. American guard Patrick Beverley (185-88, college: Arkansas) replied with 24 points and 9 rebounds and Slovenian power forward Miha Zupan (205-82) added 16 points in the effort for Spartak St.Petersburg. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Newly promoted BC Nizhny Novgorod maintains eighth position with 6-12 record. Spartak St.Petersburg at the other side dropped to the fifth place with seven games lost. BC Nizhny Novgorod will face higher ranked Enisey Krasnoyarsk (#6) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Spartak St.Petersburg will play against Triumph Lyubertsy in Lubertsy.
