1/8 Finals Round 1: San Antonio S. - Memphis G. 98-101
Date: April 17, 2011
The Memphis Grizzlies beat the San Antonio Spurs 101-98 to earn their first National Basketball Association postseason win. Zach Randolph scored 25 points and had 14 rebounds for the Grizzlies at AT&T Center in San Antonio in the first game of the best-of-seven series. Marc Gasol added 24 points, twice his season average, for Memphis. “It was a tough day, it was a physical game,” Randolph said in a televised courtside interview. “We just kept fighting.” San Antonio won the NBA title four times from 1999 to 2007, while the Grizzlies have never gone past the first round of the playoffs in three previous attempts, losing each of their previous 12 postseason games. The Spurs had the second-best regular-season record after the Chicago Bulls and finished atop the Western Conference with a 61-21 record. The Grizzlies were eighth in the conference, with a 46-36 mark. Memphis ended the game on a 7-0 scoring run and Shane Battier hit a 25-foot 3-pointer with 23 seconds to play to put the Grizzlies ahead 99-98. Tony Allen extended the lead to three points with 10 seconds left on a pair of free throws. All-star guard Manu Ginobili, San Antonio’s second-leading scorer with an average of 17.4 points per game, didn’t play after spraining his right elbow in the Spurs’ regular-season finale. Ginobili’s replacement, George Hill, scored 15 points for the Spurs, who were limited to 40 percent shooting. Richard Jefferson missed a 3-pointer with one second left for San Antonio, which split four regular-season games with the Grizzlies. The teams return to the AT&T Center for Game 2 on April 20 before heading to Memphis for two games. *Courtesy of www.bloomberg.com
