1/8 Finals Round 5: San Antonio S. - Memphis G. 110-103 OT
Date: April 27, 2011
It took a while for the Grizzlies to finally get into gear, and when they did, the plucky eighth seed appeared as though they would leave the Western Conference’s best regular-season team record-wise in their dust. But then, out of nowhere, the San Antonio Spurs found another gear. And they didn’t mind admitting that their 110-103 overtime victory over the Griz in Game 5 at the AT&T Center was fueled by a little luck. That’s essentially how Spurs guard Manu Ginobili summed up the waning seconds of regulation. Reserve Gary Neal caught an inbounds pass with 1.7 seconds left, took a dribble and then connected on a straight away 3-pointer that forced overtime as the buzzer sounded on the fourth quarter. The Spurs then dominated the extra period, trimming the Grizzlies’ lead in the best-of-seven series to 3-2 with Game 6 scheduled for Friday night in FedExForum. “When you’re facing elimination, you always get something out of nowhere,” Ginobili said. “I don’t really think we showed the heart of a champion. We got lucky to tell you the truth. … Overall, they played a better game. We just stuck in there and kept fighting.” The Griz had the Spurs on the ropes but couldn’t knock them out despite Zach Randolph’s 26-point, 11-rebound effort. Mike Conley chipped in 20 points while Marc Gasol’s 17 rebounds tied a franchise single-game playoff record. Ginobili’s 33 points led the Spurs, who also benefited from Tony Parker’s 24 points. Parker scored six points in overtime when the Spurs were sharper offensively. The Griz missed 6 of their 7 field-goal attempts and were outrebounded 7-3 in the extra period. *Courtesy of www.commercialappeal.com
