Finals Game 1: Leiden - Groningen 107-89
Date: May 14, 2011
In the Vijfmeihal for Game #1 of the DBL finals between ZZ Leiden and the defending Dutch champions Gas Terra Flames, a 15-0 run for ZZ Leiden between the end of the 3rd quarter until midway through the 4th was the shot in the arm for ZZ, as the team of DBL Coach-of-the-Year Toon van Helfteren fired the first shot, winning convincingly by the score of 107-89. ZZ found themselves in the early going under pressure from the Flames'attack, with the Flames making 6 three-pointers in the 1st quarter, and at one point being down 44-35 in the 2nd quarter. But thanks to the strong 1st half play of DBL Most Improved Player Worthy de Jong (194-G-88, agency: R.H.Consultancy) who scored 15 pts. in the 1st half to help close it to 50-48 at the end of the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd quarter it would remain tight, with both teams exchanging the lead 3 times and tied 6 times. Perhaps the shot that would be an omen for things to come for the Flames would be the buzzer-beating halfcourt shot from ZZ PG Thomas Jackson (175-G-80, agency: 011 Sports, college: Butler) to close out the 3rd quarter, with the Flames leading 74-73. In the first three minutes of the 4th quarter ZZ would turn a one-point deficit into an 85-74 lead after an Arvin Slagter (190-G-85, agency: Court Side) three-pointer. DBL MVP Jason Dourisseau (196-G-83, college: Nebraska) did his best to keep the defending Dutch champs within striking distance, with a three-pointer and field goal at 4:15 remaining to bring it within 89-82, but from there on a three-point play by de Jong would put ZZ back into double digit lead and turn back the Flames' threat. It also helped that ZZ were able to penetrate the Flames' defense at will, getting frequently to the free throw line. ZZ also shot a sizzling 17 of 19 FT's in the quarter, as well as making 4 three-pointers. ZZ were led in scoring by de Jong with a season and career-high 28 pts., with Seamus Boxley (201-F-82, college: Portland St.) adding 24 pts. on 8-11 shooting. Matt Bauscher (188-G-85, agency: 540 Sports, college: Boise St.) led the Flames with 17 pts. ZZ Leiden will take a 1-0 lead into the Martiniplaza on Tuesday night. *by SANDERS JACKSON
