Very expected game in Hamilton where 6th ranked Manawatu J. (6-8) was defeated by second ranked Waikato P. (12-3) 84-77 on Wednesday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Manawatu J. won third quarter 20-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Waikato P. made 20-of-23 free shots (87.0 percent) during the game. It was a great evening for international center Alex Pledger (216-87, college: Belm.Abbey) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 18 rebounds. The former international swingman Thomas Abercrombie (198-87, college: Washington St., agency: Priority Sports) helped adding 21 points and 7 rebounds. Waikato P.'s coach used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Chris Hagan (175-89, college: Midwestern St.) responded with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and the former international power forward Nick Horvath (208-81, college: Duke) scored 17 points and 6 rebounds. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Waikato P. have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. They maintain second place with 12-3 record having just -1 point less than leader Wellington S. Manawatu J. lost third consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with eight games lost. Waikato P. will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Manawatu J. will play against Taranaki MA (#8) in New Plymouth and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
