Regular Season Round 1: Zlatorog - Maccabi T-A 72-101
Date: October 3, 2011
Very expected game in Lasko where bottom-ranked Slovenian Zlatorog (0-2) was rolled over by leader Israeli Maccabi T-A (3-0) 101-72 on Monday. The game was mostly controlled by Maccabi T-A. Zlatorog was better in fourth quarter 24-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Maccabi T-A well out of reach of Zlatorog shooting 71.9 percent from the field. They outrebounded Zlatorog 34-22 including a 24-8 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Maccabi T-A made 7 blocks. Zlatorog was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Greek center Sofoklis Schortsanitis (206-85) fired 18 points and 9 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. Power forward Lior Eliyahu (206-85, agency: Z.A.G. - Law Offices) chipped in 18 points (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). Center Alen Omic (213-92) produced 11 points and 7 rebounds and American guard John Roberson (180-88, college: Texas Tech) added 10 points and 4 assists respectively for lost side. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Defending Israeli champion maintains first place with 3-0 record. Loser Zlatorog still closes the standings with two games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
