Regular Season Round 3: Idaho S. - Santa Cruz W. 77-120

Date: December 1, 2011
Pick a stat, any stat. It should help illustrate how bad the Idaho Stampede were beaten by the Dakota Wizards on Thursday night at CenturyLink Arena. The score — 120-77 — only tells part of the story. How about this? The Stampede began last season winless in their first seven games and 2-13, but they never lost by more than 30 points. Thursday night, they lost by 43 points. Idaho was outrebounded 53-38. Two Stampede starters, Jason Ellis and Kendall Dartex, went a combined 0-for-9 from the field and finished with zero points. “We just didn’t play well tonight,” coach Randy Livingston said. “We didn’t make shots. We didn’t defend. Sometimes you have nights like this. It’s pro basketball.” Asked about the game’s most telling statistic and Livingston pointed to the two teams’ shooting percentage: Dakota finished at 58 percent, Idaho at 32.9. “They shot almost 60 percent from the field,” he said. “Anytime the opponent shoots 60 percent and you shoot 30, that’s a recipe for disaster.” The NBA notified the D-League this week that rosters could be expanded to 12 players in anticipation of call-ups for the higher league’s training camps in the wake of the lockout. Idaho added forward Kendall Dartez and guard Dontell Jefferson. Dartez was drafted by Idaho and missed the first two games because of injury. Jefferson, a D-League veteran, was playing in Canada. Both played limited minutes and were nonfactors, leaving Idaho looking for answers. “We’ve just got to stick together and go out and compete,” said guard Cheyne Gadson, who had a team-high 20 points. Competing is something Livingston said his team didn’t do Thursday night. Asked if his players gave up on the game, he admitted they did. “From the beginning,” he said. “I don’t think they were ever into it. Put that on the (coaching) staff.” The teams play again Friday night at CenturyLink Arena. “Maybe every shot will fall,” Livingston said. “… But we’ve got to find a way to get a win.” *Courtesy of www.idahostatesman.com
