Regular Season Round 4: Idaho S. - Santa Cruz W. 97-92

Date: December 2, 2011
One night after the worst loss in franchise history, the Idaho Stampede had two choices: hang their heads and take their lumps again or come out fighting. Idaho chose the latter, and the result was a 97-92 win over the Dakota Wizards on Friday at CenturyLink Arena. “It was embarrassing,” Seth Tarver said of the previous night’s 120-77 defeat at the hands of the Wizards. “But we came out and worked harder tonight. It’s about pride, really.” And defense. And rebounding. It’s no coincidence that Idaho’s first win came in the first game that it outrebounded the other team. “It feels a lot better than a loss,” said Tarver, who scored a game-high 22 points. “The first win seems to be the hardest to get.” He speaks from experience. Last season, the team went 0-7 before winning its first game. This year, Idaho (1-3) dropped three in a row before winning its first contest. Second-year coach Randy Livingston was happier than anyone to get the first win — especially coming off such a devastating loss. “You can’t explain it,” he said. “We were a little flabbergasted about what happened Thursday night. … But I think we kind of found our soul as a team.” The two games could be summed up by their second quarters. Thursday, Dakota (2-2) outscored Idaho 38-19. Friday, Idaho had a 29-12 advantage. Idaho added to the lead in the third quarter, and from there it was just a matter of hanging on. *Courtesy of www.idahostatesman.com
