Regular Season Round 5: Sioux Falls S. - Los Angeles D. 92-94

Date: December 3, 2011
While Skyforce coach Mo McHone thinks his team got better this weekend, its record got worse and its lineup is likely to follow suit. Sioux Falls had two shots to tie in the final 8 seconds Saturday – one at the line and one from the field – only to miss both and drop a 94-92 decision to the Los Angeles D-Fenders in NBA D-League play before a crowd of 2,443 at the Arena. The contest was soundly uneven, one team scoring in the teens in every quarter. In that regard, it was sort of fitting that the Force had an opportunity to salvage a series split after trailing by 18 in the first quarter and by nine with less than 2 minutes left. “This is a very competitive, hard, strong team – bigger and stronger than we were,” McHone said of the D-Fenders. “That part of it, I thought we met the challenge tonight. All we had to do is get lucky and make the shot.” Point guard Gabe Pruitt had a chance to tie from the foul line with 7.9 seconds left, only to have his second attempt rattle out. Then, off guard Casey Mitchell – who finished with 20 points – missed a contested, flailing jumper off the dribble as time expired, the spot-up shooter forced to put the ball on the deck. Sioux Falls (1-3) lost despite shooting 50 percent from the field and allowing just 36.5 percent. How? By finishing minus-6 in turnover margin – allowing 27 points off 20 giveaways – and giving up 17 offensive rebounds. The D-Fenders (4-2) got off 12 more attempts from the field and outscored Sioux Falls 33-24 from the foul line. Center Brandon Costner, a big man with a soft touch, led the way with a game-high 32 points with four 3-pointers – three of those in the final frame. Costner and Elijah Millsap combined for 26 in the first quarter in what played out like a continuation of Friday’s lopsided affair. While the Skyforce recovered to take a brief lead late in the second quarter, the lifeless start set a bad tone. “In the second half, we had the intensity,” said Sioux Falls forward Charles Garcia, who had 20 points. “We’ve got to start out the game with that. If we start out the game with that, we could have won.” (Page 2 of 2) To be clear, the Force was up-and-down in the second half, too, converting just two field goals in the third quarter. That offset the fact that they allowed just three baskets in the second quarter. More examples: L.A. had three 3-pointers through three quarters and four in the fourth. Pruitt had four fouls and three points through three quarters. He and two other Skyforce starters – Greg Stiemsma and Anthony Mason – tallied more points in the fourth quarter than they did in the first three. “The ebb and flow of the game was kind of weird,” McHone admitted. “It looked like we were out of it at the end and the next thing you know we’ve got a chance to win.” There’s no telling when that will happen again as the Sioux Falls roster could lose 4-5 players this week with NBA training camps set to open next Friday. Media reports indicate NBA teams can contact free agents beginning Monday. “We’re going to have to make some moves – I really don’t know,” McHone said. “The (available player) pool is so bad, the pool is so weak that if we lose four guys and I have to go to the pool to get four guys – I just don’t know what we’re going to do.” *Courtesy of www.argusleader.com
