Regular Season Round 5: Tulsa 66ers - Austin T. 109-96
Date: December 3, 2011
One night after the Austin Toros handed Tulsa its first loss of the season, the 66ers returned the favor to their NBA Development League Western Conference rivals. Using stellar second-half defense and a double-double from former Oral Roberts player Marcus Lewis, Tulsa notched a 109-96 win over the Toros in the home opener inside the Tulsa Convention Center. The win was the first home-opening win in Tulsa franchise history as the 66ers had dropped their previous six home openers. After allowing Austin (2-1) to score 61 points in the opening half, Tulsa (4-1) limited the Toros to just 35 after the break. Tulsa also owned a 48-28 advantage in rebounding while forcing 17 turnovers. "We've been a good defensive team all year and we couldn't accept giving up 61 points in the first half," said Tulsa head coach Nate Tibbetts. "I thought our guys really stepped up in the second half." Tulsa used its defense to frustrate the Toros and open up a seven-point lead at the end of the third quarter, then started the final period on a 15-4 run to take complete control of the contest. Tulsa would lead by as many as 19 in the fourth quarter. One night after being limited by the Toros to just eight points, Lewis exploded for 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace the 66er attack. It was the third double-double in five games for Lewis and represented his season high in points. "Last night was the first time that I have seen Marcus frustrated, but I thought he really bounced back tonight," Tibbetts said. Lewis was one of five Tulsa players to finish in double-digit scoring, with guards Jerome Dyson scoring 19 and Dwight Buycks coming off the bench to add 18. Austin opened the game on fire, hitting 10 of its first 12 shots, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, as the Toros opened up a 15-point lead midway through the period. Tulsa would slowly chip away at the Austin advantage, pulling within 11 at the end of the first quarter and finally taking the lead on a jumper by Buycks with 2:23 to play before intermission. The 66ers would take a 63-61 edge into the locker room as Lewis connected on an acrobatic shot with 9.3 seconds left in the quarter. *Courtesy of www.tulsaworld.com
