D League
Regular Season Round 15: Santa Cruz W. - Springfield A. 103-108
Date: December 23, 2011
The Dakota Wizards withstood the first salvo of the Springfield Armor's long-range artillery. But the second round was too much, giving Springfield a 108-103 D-League victory on Friday at the Civic Center. Lance Hurdle did the bulk of the long-range firing for Springfield, swishing 8 of 10 from behind the arc. His display included three 3-pointers in the final 7 minutes that turned the tide. "After the first couple I felt the rhythm," said Hurdle, a 6-2 guard. "... I just got that feel and let it go." The Wizards, down 54-42 at one point, charged back to tie the game at 93. They took a 95-94 lead on Justin Johnson's 15-footer with 3:58 to play. Enter Hurdle, who sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a Wizards turnover. That put the Armor back in the lead at 100-95 with 1:39 on the clock. The Wizards cut the deficit to 100-98 on three free throws by Shy Ely with :36 remaining, but the Armor put the game away at the free throw line. They sank 8 of 10 free throws over the final 36 seconds to clinch the victory. Jerry Smith and JamesOn Curry each accounted for three of the freebies. Dakota coach Nate Bjorkgren said the defeat was a winnable game that got away. "We were up one (point) late and theybanged in back-to-back tough 3s," Bjorkgren said. The 3-pointers were Springfield's signature for their two-game sweep at the Civic Center. "Their last two games in Bismarck they shot over 55 percent from the arc. It's hard to overcome that," Bjorkgren said. The Armor sizzled in the first half, gunning in 9 of 15 3-point tries en route to a 57-46 lead. Bjorkgren said the halftime discussion was about defense. "We were more aggressive coming out of the locker room (after intermission) and our defense got us back in the game," he said. Dakota limited Springfield to 23 points in the third period to pull within three at 80-77 at the third break. Bob MacKinnon, the Springfield coach, said he knew the Wizards would come calling at some point. "I'm really happy with the way we gutted it out," MacKinnon said. "They're a good team. I never imagined that we'd lead the whole game." Hurdle said the Wizard comeback was more a case of Dakota playing hard rather than the Armor falling asleep. "They made an honest run. They're a really good defensive team and we expected them to come back. We had to weather the run and keep pushing," he said. Hurdle was the game's leading scorer with 25 points. He was one of six Springfield players in double figures. Eugene Spates contributed 10 rebounds and Curry added seven assists. Edwin Ubiles, in his first game back with the Wizards after two weeks at the Golden State training camp, scored 24 points. He was 10-24 from the floor, including 1-for-6 from 3-point territory. Six other Wizards reached double figures. Curtis Withers snared 10 rebounds for the hosts. The game was a statistical standoff with the exception of Springfield's sharpshooting. The Armor hit 54 percent from outside to 37 percent for the Wizards. With the victory the Armor swept the two-game series and improved to 7-4. The Wizards slipped to 4-6. The Wizards are off for six days before playing host to Sioux Falls for two games on the final two nights of the year. Springfield, now 2-2 on a 16-day trip, continues its nomadic ways with a Christmas game at Sioux Falls. They conclude their seven-game swing with two games at Austin on Dec. 29 and 30. *Courtesy of https://bismarcktribune.com
