Regular Season Round 16: St.John M.R. - London L. 93-104
Date: December 29, 2011
Despite a gutsy effort the Saint John Mill Rats suffered a sour 104-93 defeat at the hands of the London Lightning at Harbour Station Thursday night in front of an electric crowd of 2,564. With the loss the Mill Rats fall to 8-9 in National Basketball League of Canada standings and the first place London Lightning improve to 13-4. After enduring several double-digit deficits, the Mill Rats came out strong early in the fourth. Steve DeLuca nailed a clutch three to cut London's lead to just four, 93-89. But, like most of the game, London came storming back with a late charge to take control of the game, proving why it's the top team in the league. Saint John's Anthony Anderson, who's second in the league in scoring, played a terrific game, pouring in a game-high 31 points. The Lightning's Gabe Freeman and Rodney Buford led their team in scoring with 20 points. Jaren Jackson appeared furious on the sidelines throughout the game and was assessed a technical foul after lashing out at officials late in the fourth quarter. "It was tough to see," said Jackson. "Our guys were playing aggressive, driving hard to the basket. I was proud of how are secondary scorers came out and played a really strong game. But we have to focus on Saturday." Making his Mill Rats' debut, former Kennebecasis High School Crusader standout Drew Stratton entered the game early in the third quarter to rousing cheers. Though he played solid defensively, grabbing one rebound, the six-foot-eight forward failed to register a point in four minutes of play. He said he was happy with his performance. "It will take a while for me to adjust to the league," he said. "It's too bad we couldn't get the win. But I'm going to look at the tape and I'm sure I'll keep improving." The Mill Rats started the game explosively. On the opening play, Kevin Francis capped a picture-perfect fast break with a an explosive dunk followed up by another beautiful put back dunk just minutes later. Thanks two consecutive threes by Antonio Burks and Anderson brought the score 28-24 at the end of the first quarter. The Mill Rats refused to go away clawing their way back time and time again. London proved up to the challenge, exposing a Saint John team that on this night demonstrated a weak inside presence. The Lightning's DeAnthony Bowden proved to be a one-man wrecking show early on, racking up four threes in the opening six minutes of the game and ending the first half with a game-high 16 points. In the second quarter the Lightning went on a 17-5 run to make the score 56-40. The Mill Rats ultimately couldn't recover. Saint John will visit the Summerside Storm on Saturday at 7 p.m. *Courtesy of https://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com
