Regular Season Round 23: Bakersfield J. - Ft.Wayne MA 96-100

Date: January 9, 2012
Mad Ants point guard Walker Russell Jr. picked a great time, in front of a slew of NBA scouts, to have his finest game of the season. Russell scored 19 points and dished out a NBA D-League season-high 19 assists in leading the Ants to a 100-96 win over the Bakersfield Jam on Monday at the D-League Showcase in Reno, Nev. "We've had players leaving, coaches leaving, no practices, but we're finally starting to get that chemistry," Russell said in a telephone interview with The News-Sentinel. "Guys are filling in their roles and we're looking like a brand new team." The Ants (7-11) came back against Bakersfield after falling behind 13-0 and 19-2 to start the game. They had closed the margin to 33-27 by the end of the first quarter and settled in for the long haul. The win was the first ever in the Showcase for the Ants. "We started off shaky, but we showed the heart we can have and the team we can be," Russell said. "We didn't have our legs at the start, but we kept fighting and the next thing you know we were up. We just have to continue to believe in each other." Ants forward Darnell Lazare also had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Jarrid Famous scored 20 points with nine boards and Sadiel Rojas came off the bench to hit 7-of-8 shots and finish with 16 points and eight rebounds. The Ants were without Ron Howard, who missed the game with a hand injury. Rojas, filling in primarily for Howard, hit a big three-point shot late in the game. "We gave Sadiel the game ball," Russell said. "He came in rebounding, playing defense, hitting some tough shots in crucial moments. He definitely deserved the game ball. Going from not playing at all, to playing a big part, that was great." Russell said he feels the team is getting back to playing "Mad Ants basketball" since the transition to new coach Steve Gansey, who improved to 2-1 as coach. "We're more confident than we've been," Russell said. "Steve brought us back to where we're saying, 'Let's have fun with it.' Steve's been doing a great job keeping the enthusiasm and confidence with everybody. The sky's the limit." Fort Wayne will play Tulsa at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the Showcase, and the game will be televised on NBA TV. Renaldo Major led Bakersfield with 14 points, but hit only 2-of-10 shots from the field. *Courtesy of www.news-sentinel.com
