Regular Season Round 17: Detroit P. - Dallas M. 86-100

Date: January 10, 2012
Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 points in just 27 minutes as the Pistons dropped their fifth straight, this time to the Mavericks, 100-86, tonight at the Palace. Shawn Marion added 14 points and Vince Carter scored 11 for the defending NBA champs. Ian Mahinmi scored 10 points off the bench. Dallas did whatever they wanted on offense, shooting 55% (38-for-69) from the field and 20 of 27 (74%) from the free-throw line. The Mavs outrebounded the Pistons, 35-29, and had 28 assists and 13 turnovers. “As I’ve said, this process may be very painful,” said Lawrence Frank, the new coach of the rebuilding Pistons. “It doesn’t get better just because you want it to get better. I hope we are all frustrated, because when you are, you have two options. The first is to work harder and understand what you want to do. The second choice isn’t an option.” Will Bynum led everyone with 20 points, but 10 of those were in the fourth quarter when the game was in hand. Brandon Knight had 12 points and Ben Gordon scored 11 for Detroit, which shot 44% (30-for-68) from the field and had 20 turnovers to only 17 assists. All of Detroit's loss in this five-game skid have come to teams which qualified for the playoffs last season. But Detroit has lost by an average margin of 20 points. *Courtesy of www.freep.com
