Regular Season Round 29: Maine RC - Springfield A. 94-120

Date: January 15, 2012
Night and day. That was the difference in the fortunes of the Springfield Armor in their two-game, home-and-home set with the Maine Red Claws. Sunday afternoon, the Armor received a record-tying performance from 3-point-sniping guard Lance Hurdle, which helped them to a 120-94 rout in front of a disappointed capacity crowd of 3,045 at the Portland Expo. Hurdle fired in eight 3-pointers (on 16 attempts), tying the franchise record, to account for his team-high 24 points. It was quite a contrast from Saturday night’s 104-97 loss to the Claws, when Springfield shot just 38.2 percent from the field and Hurdle went 0 for 7 from beyond the arc. “We just played with a lot of energy,” Hurdle said. “We didn’t like the outcome of (Saturday). There was nothing that we couldn’t do. We just played together.” The Armor grabbed the lead at 11-9 midway through the opening quarter and never let it get away. They owned a 30-21 advantage after one, and it ballooned to 64-42 by halftime. By that time, four members of the starting five had scored in double figures. “Coach (Bob MacKinnon) got us ready for this game,” Hurdle said. “He’s an excellent motivational speaker. We just fed off of his energy.” Hurdle carried Springfield through the first quarter, hitting for 12 of his 15 first-half points. “When Lance gets going, he’s tough to stop,” said forward Damian Johnson (23 points). “When he hit that first one, I knew it was going to be a good game for him. You could see it in his eyes.” “Our motto is ‘Get stops and get shots,’” Hurdle said. “Obviously, we have to get stops first. The offense will take care of itself.” In the second quarter, Springfield went on a 14-0 run over a four-minute span, kicked off by center Jeff Foote’s lone basket and capped by six straight points from Johnson. “He (Johnson) made the second, third, fourth and fifth effort,” Hurdle said. “Along with everybody else on the team. He’s one of those guys who does all of the little dirty (jobs) that turn into big things. That’s a guy you need on every team.” The Red Claws, seeking some ignition, began firing in outside shots, including one by former Celtic Ricky Davis, who is trying to jump-start his pro career. The Armor answered every Maine 3 with one of their own, however, keeping the Red Claws from gaining any traction. There was let-up for the Armor in the third quarter, when they tore open a 100-70 lead before cruising to the finish. “We made shots,” MacKinnon said. “And (Saturday), we didn’t make shots. Sometimes they go in and sometimes they don’t. It’s not real complicated. We were fortunate to make some shots.” *Courtesy of www.masslive.com
