Regular Season Round 23: LA Lakers - Dallas M. 73-70

Date: January 16, 2012
The reigning NBA champion Dallas Mavericks narrowly lost to the Los Angeles Lakers 73-70 on Mon., Jan. 16. It was the first meeting between the Western Conference rivals since the Mavs swept the Lakers out of the playoffs last season. The Mavericks entered the game riding a 4-game winning streak. Dallas and Los Angeles each shot poorly throughout the first half. In the third quarter the Mavs' defense clamped down on the Lakers, allowing the home team just seven points in the third quarter. Mavericks bench guard Jason Terry hit a floater in the lane with :09.9 remaining in regulation, but Dallas double-teamed Los Angeles guard Kobe Bryant while he was 35 feet from the bucket. With the clock running down, Bryant easily found a wide open Derek Fisher on the 3-point line who hit a 3-pointer over Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki who didn't contest Fisher's shot which proved to be the game-winner. Mavs swingman Vince Carter missed a 3-point attempt to tie with time expiring and his team saw an end to the 4-game winning streak. Dallas shot just 35% from the field and failed to score more than 19 points in any of the four quarters in regulation. Los Angeles eeked out a win despite shooting just 10% (1-10) from beyond the 3-point line and a 38.2% FG percentage. Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 21 points while forward Lamar Odom added 10 -- the only two Mavericks to score in double figures. Los Angeles center Andrew Bynum led the way for his team with a 17 point, 15 rebound double-double. The Mavericks will remain in Los Angeles to next face the Clippers on Wed., Jan. 18, with tip-off set for 9:30 p.m., Central time. *Courtesy of www.kntu.com
