Regular Season Round 24: Cleveland C. - Golden St.W. 95-105

Date: January 17, 2012
Now introducing the new Golden State Warriors. With point guard Stephen Curry missing his seventh straight game because of a sprained right ankle and shooting guard Monta Ellis struggling on a 2-for-12 shooting night, we got a look at what else the Warriors have. They shrugged off the backcourt woes, which used to be a recipe for disaster, and offered a taste of how the team hopes to be cooking in the future with a 105-95 victory over Cleveland. "That's what good teams do," coach Mark Jackson said. "In spite of adversity, they find ways to get it done. Our guys did exactly that. When you compete and you defend, you'll win your fair share of games." The Warriors (5-8) have often needed big nights from Curry, Ellis and some other third party to win in the past. Now, they're playing defense and getting contributions from a deep bench of role players. When the Cavaliers (6-7) went ahead 67-62 with 7:36 remaining in the third quarter, Jackson yanked his starting unit. A lineup of Nate Robinson, Klay Thompson, Brandon Rush, Dominic McGuire and Ekpe Udoh erased the deficit in a little more than five minutes. "That was huge for us, especially on the road," said power forward David Lee, who scored a game-high 29 points to go along with nine rebounds. "The (bench) did it with defense. They did it the way the starters should have done it." The starters didn't sulk. They cheered and waved towels like end-of-bench guys. They went nuts when Robinson pushed the tempo on back-to-back possessions and found Rush for layups that tied it 75-75 with 2 1/2 minutes left in the third. "Those are our teammates, and they're out there hustling and playing hard," said starting swingman Dorell Wright, who had 10 points on 4-for-11 shooting. "Nate is the little dude with the big heart. He's got no fear of anyone." Robinson finished with 17 points and 10 assists, joining Minnesota's Ricky Rubio and Denver's Andre Miller as the only players with double-digit assists totals off the bench this season. Thompson and Rush each scored 14 points on efficient shooting nights, and McGuire and Udoh set the defensive tone. "I've got to hold guys accountable," Jackson said. "If you're not getting it done defensively, it's unacceptable. I'll give my guys credit. I've been on teams when the starters would have come out of the game upset, said different things and quit. Our guys didn't do that." Nope. With 10 minutes left, they re-entered a tie game and grabbed the victory. Lee scored 13 points in the final 10 minutes, and center Andris Biedrins, who had 11 rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot, provided the defense with an anchor. "He does all of the little things, all of the blue-collar work," Lee said of Biedrins. "Monta or I might get credit for making shots, but (Biedrins) is making the plays that win games." *Courtesy of www.sfgate.com
