Regular Season Round 28: Chicago B. - Charlotte B. 95-89

Date: January 21, 2012
Richard Hamilton won a title with the Piston so he understands when a team has the look of a champion. As he stood in the Bulls' locker room after Saturday night's 95-89 victory over Charlotte, Hamilton saw players willing to sacrifice. "To win a championship, that's what you have to do: Everybody has to be in it for one reason, and that's to win," Hamilton said. "If you look across the league, you see it all the time — guys playing for totally different reasons other than trying to win. … Not just the chemistry on the court, but the chemistry off the court is important. Guys in this locker room really like each other." The Bulls needed a collective effort as Derrick Rose missed his fourth consecutive game with a left big toe injury. Post players Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson also were sidelined with ankle injuries. Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer, and Richard Hamilton picked up the scoring slack with 65 combined points. Omer Asik, who got his first-career start in place of Noah, responded with 15 rebounds. And 36-year-old newcomer Mike James, fresh from the NBDL, contributed nine points and 10 assists in 16-plus minutes as starting point guard C.J. Watson got into foul trouble. Watson finished with 11 points and nine assists. "Mike was great," coach Tom Thibodeau. "Mike got into a rhythm, got us into a rhythm." The Bulls didn't miss a beat, improving their record to a league-best 15-3, 7-0 at home. Boozer led the way with 23 points and nine rebounds while Deng added 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a steal before spraining his left wrist. X-rays were negative but Deng's status is day to day. "He really is the glue to our team," Thibodeau said of Deng. "There's nothing that he doesn't do well." Hamilton had a season-high 20 points while knocking down 9 of 15 shots. He and Boozer combined for 25 of the Bulls' 30 third-quarter points. The Bulls seemed to step up their effort in the fourth quarter, when the lead ballooned to 19. James was the catalyst, scoring seven consecutive points to start the period. Thibodeau emphasized that Rose would make the final decision on when to return to the lineup. The coach also said adding a free-agent post player such as Joel Przybilla or Chris Richard would be up to management. But Thibodeau seems rather content with his current cast. "I've said all along, we have the right guys," Thibodeau said. "No matter who is out, we have more than enough to win. The next guy steps up. He knows what he has to do. He knows what his role is." Sounds like the look of a champion. *Courtesy of https://articles.chicagotribune.com
