Regular Season Round 23: UFV - TWU 88-72

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 6th ranked Spartans' (8-7) road loss to fifth ranked Cascades (10-5) 72-88 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Cascades. Spartans was better in second period 16-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Spartans to just 7 points in first quarter. Cascades made 32-of-37 free shots (86.5 percent) during the game, while Spartans only scored seven points from the stripe. They outrebounded Spartans 34-22 including 26 on the defensive glass. Spartans were plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was guard Joel Friesen (193) who scored 24 points and 8 rebounds (was perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line !!!). Forward Kyle Grewal (198-88) chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds. Five Cascades players scored in double figures. Guard Calvin Westbrook (193-88, college: CS Stanislaus) produced 21 points and American guard Tristan Smith (183-86) added 12 points and 6 assists respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cascades have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to fourth place. Loser Spartans dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
