Regular Season Round 40: Iowa E. - Santa Cruz W. 96-108
Date: February 4, 2012
Getting outrebounded by nearly 20 and outscored 31-0 on second-chance points will not win many, if any games. A lesson learned by the Iowa Energy on Saturday. The Dakota Wizards handed the NBA Development League-leading Energy a 108-96 loss at Wells Fargo Arena after winning the rebounding battle 57-39. “They killed us on the boards,” Iowa center Andrew Drevo said. “That’s the biggest thing. We had a lot of missed opportunities, and that’s hard to overcome.” The loss comes a night after the Energy (18-8) topped the Wizards (12-13) by being the aggressor, something Iowa coach Kevin Young says was missing on Saturday. “Last night we were the tougher team and we won, and tonight we weren’t. That’s the bottom line,” Young said. “But I have to give them (Dakota) credit. We’ve played them three times in a row and two out of the three, they were the tougher team.” Dakota ran out to a 12-2 lead, but the Energy went on a 17-5 run to take a 19-17 lead late in the first quarter. The run was punctuated by Curtis Stinson-assisted fast-break baskets by Marqus Blakely and Mike Efevberha and a 3-pointer by Moses Ehambe. The Wizards closed the quarter strong and led 26-22 heading into the second quarter. Dakota pushed its lead to as much as nine at 41-32, but Iowa fought back to tie the game at 47 after a Andrew Drevo triple with 1:40 left in the first half. The Wizards edged back out in front to close the half up 52-49. Dakota took control of the game in the third, pushing their advantage to 13 heading into the fourth at 84-71. “This game is a game of runs,” Ehambe, who scored a team-high 18 points, said. “Tonight we didn’t go on our runs. We just need to keep on working.” Iowa managed to trim the Dakota lead to five with less than 5 minutes left in the game, but the Wizards slammed the door on an Energy rally from the free-throw line. For the game, Dakota made 25-of-32 from the charity stripe. With six days off, Iowa will refocus and prepare to face a familiar opponent, Dakota, on the road Friday. “It’s a long season,” Young said. “We play these guys again for the fourth time in a row. I’m not big on knee-jerk reactions, but there are things we need to address from the toughness standpoint and the good news is we’ll figure out.” *Courtesy of www.desmoinesregister.com
