Regular Season Round 42: Cleveland C. - Dallas M. 91-88
Date: February 4, 2012
The Dallas Mavericks are a popular team in Cleveland because they beat LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals, but they weren’t the best team in town Saturday night. The Cavaliers rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat the Mavs 91-88 in front of 17,443 at Quicken Loans Arena, giving Cleveland its first victory of the season over a plus-.500 team. “It can give us confidence we can play with the big boys,” Cavs coach Byron Scott said. Cleveland (9-13), which was once again without Anthony Parker (back), Daniel Gibson (neck) and Tristan Thompson (ankle), got a lot of positive contributions, but veteran center Anderson Varejao and rookie point guard Kyrie Irving were at the top of the list. Varejao had 17 points and 17 rebounds, while the 19-year-old Irving had 20 points, seven assists and only one turnover in 36 minutes. Irving was at his best down the stretch, scoring on two twisting drives to the hoop. On the second, he got by long-armed Delonte West and finished at the rim to put Cleveland up 91-88 with 15.8 seconds left. “He’s got a unique ability to get to the basket,” Scott said. “When he gets there, he has a great way of finishing.” Out of timeouts, the Mavs (14-11) were unable to get off a quality shot, with Jason Terry finally glass-balling a 3-pointer from the top of the key. The clock expired, but officials put 0.5 seconds back on and gave Dallas the ball under its basket. With the Cavs defending the 3-point line and conceding a layup, Brendan Wright’s desperation heave did not draw iron, setting off a wild celebration at The Q. “It lets us know we can beat some of the best teams if we play the right way,” Scott said. The Cavs, who didn’t attempt a free throw in the second half, were far from their best offensively — they shot just .398 from the field (37-for-93) and made only 6 of 23 3-pointers — but they did everything else well. Cleveland outrebounded Dallas 46-39 and had a 17-8 edge in second-chance points. It also committed just nine turnovers to the Mavs’ 21, leading to a 21-6 Cavs advantage in points off turnovers. Defense was equally important, as Cleveland held Dallas to 13 points in the third quarter and 37 in the second half, when the Mavs were 14-for-36 from the field (.389). “Any time you beat the world champs, it’s a great win,” Scott said. Making it better still was the fact Antawn Jamison suffered through a 6-for-18 shooting night, but went 7-for-9 at the line and finished with 19 points and nine boards. Ramon Sessions had similar struggles, going 2-for-11 from the field, but he had eight assists and no turnovers, while ever-improving Alonzo Gee had seven of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Terry had 17 points off the bench. Terry’s 3-pointer with 4:14 to go put Dallas up 85-81, but the Mavs didn’t make another field goal on a night when many of the people wearing their jerseys suddenly became Cavs fans again. “At the end of the game, they were cheering for us,” Scott said. “That’s all that matters.” *Courtesy of https://chronicle.northcoastnow.com
