Regular Season Round 40: Canton C. - Austin T. 101-110
Date: February 4, 2012
Tyrell Biggs looked back at a frustrating Saturday night at Memorial Civic Center and tried to explain what happened. “We just lacked energy that first half, and that really hurt us,” Biggs said. “It put us in a ditch early.” The Charge found a way to climb out and peek over the edge. Then, suddenly, they were right back in that ditch. The Charge erased a big deficit during the third quarter, took an early fourth-quarter lead, then faded down the stretch as the Austin Toros snapped a four-game losing streak with a 110-101 win at Memorial Civic Center in front of 3,248 fans. The Charge scored on eight of nine possessions, and six straight, to end the third quarter. Bench players Frank Hassell, Antoine Agudio and Antonio Graves, along with starter Manny Harris, keyed a Canton stretch that almost completely dissolved a deficit that was as high as 15 in the period. When Graves dropped off a pass to Hassell for a dunk to start the fourth, the deficit was gone, tying the score at 76-76. Later, Graves’ driving 3-point play with 9:38 left put the Charge up 81-79 — their first lead since midway through the first quarter. “The ball stopped sticking. There was ball movement,” Charge head coach Alex Jensen said. “Plus, the defense. For any team in basketball, the best jump shots feed off your defense when you have numbers.” But the Charge went cold from there, making just one of their next five shots and turning the ball over twice as the Toros (19-8) regained the lead and built it back up from there. “You forget what got you the comeback,” Jensen said. “It was defense. It was points in transition. And rebounding. Then all of a sudden guys get comfortable. Then you’re not out there on a screen or late on a rotation — like we began the game — and, bam, a two-point lead is an eight-point deficit.” Harris led Canton with 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, although his performance was hurt by seven turnovers. Biggs scored 18 points. The Charge (13-16) struggled to finish in the paint most of the night. Austin blocked nine shots, led by Malcolm Thomas’ six. The 6-foot-9 Thomas, a key member of San Diego State’s Sweet 16 team last year, is on assignment from the Spurs. There was plenty of contact on several Canton drives, something that Jensen made sure to point out to the officials. “We tried to play through it,” Biggs said. “That was extremely frustrating.” Austin more than doubled Canton in free throws, making 23 of 30 to Canton’s 13 of 14. “You can never blame the officials,” Jensen said. “You got to keep driving. I thought we lost a little bit of our aggressiveness coming off the ball screens. And a couple of times we tried to spin it or scoop it instead of just taking it strong. I think that was part of the reason we didn’t get the calls.” Da’Sean Butler made 4 of 8 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead seven Toros in double figures. Lance Thomas scored 20 as Austin shot 51.3 percent from the floor and seemed to have a little more energy than the Charge on the second night of a back-to-back between the two teams. Austin slapped a 22-7 run on the Charge in the second quarter to lead by as many as 18 and go to the half up, 59-45. Lance Thomas scored 14 points during the stretch as the Toros hurt the Charge in pick-and-rolls. Hassell shook off a bad start to finish with 12 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Charge’s 46-37 advantage on the boards. T.J. Campbell totaled 16 points and five assists, while Graves and Agudio added nine points apiece. *Courtesy of www.cantonrep.com
